To Peg It or Not

Tom Mosher, Double peg

I still have a strong interest in staying pegless but there are tons of dudes putting pegs on and shredding pretty hard.  At the RVA Jam, I saw tons of pegs floating around and there was lots of discussion about why and why not to run them.  A lot of the dudes who I talked to about it were sort of unsure on whether or not they really felt that it was necessary to keep a peg, but then their are the full blown dudes like Mosher, Schmitt and Wonka.  If you really think about it, these things are popping up everywhere.  I can list at least 12 people who are running pegs and or are going to in the near future.

My argument is that you can do pretty much the same grinds without pegs as you can with pegs, so why bother with the clunkyness of a peg.  I mean, yeah its easier to grind with pegs, but does it look as smooth and fluid?  For instance, Wonka did a pegless smith at last years BFF here in NYC, and it looked flawless, but some of the other smiths that I have seen are sort of whiley like.  That could be just a coincidence, and not to mention the box that he was grinding was wet.  Although, i do think that if you have a smaller surface area to grind with, you focus more on locking that grind, as a pose to have these huge pipes to save you even if you don't quite lock on correctly.

Wonka, Smith grind

Mike, Wonka, and I went out rail searching for the past three days that Mike has been in town.  They both did rails, and, I didnt.  I mean, i feel sort of week about it, but it will happen.  The main reason why i didnt get down on the ones that we found was because of my fear of my front bolt scraping into the rail and slinging me (its happened on smaller rails).  There are ways to avoid this, like doing pedal grinds, or hanging your front beside the rail instead of locking onto the rail.  But, we all no that the crank arm grind is one of the prettiest out there, ha.  You can get bmx sized axels and then run bmx bolts on the front, which are designed to slide metal, so, I am pretty sure that that will be the rout that I will take.

  3. i am not a freestyler, but i think pegs are just a part of the direction that freestyle fixed will take. it opens a lot of new possibilites, even if someone just chooses em to try out things.. fixed freestyle is still in babyshoes in my eyes. and i always had the feeling that theres only one fixed gear trick. riding fast. but to each his own. damn, some kids already go big these days, and it will get bigger and higher and more tech... i think if pegs or not: it depends on the style and tricks you wanna do...

  5. the lines are getting so blurred now. 26" wheels and pegs. the ONLY thing setting moshers bike and the volume 26" bmx bow are a higher crossbar and fixed gears. SO, since 26's and pegs are in the name of "progression" (aka making it easier), then just say f it and drop the crossbar and while you're at it that fixed cog makes it harder to approach tricks so get rid of that and throw a freewheel on it.

  7. I suck at pegless grinding. Running pegs makes grinds more consistent, so I end up having more fun. It also has minimum impact on the rideability of the bike, so I'm all for pegs. To each their own of course.

  8. Yo dude, what's my forehead got to do with this post in particular? I mean hell, I did it on a bmx, not a fixy. And I was riding dirt and wearing a helmet, neither of which the dudes in your other photo's are doing.

  9. You can always just half ass ride with pegs. I plan on throwing one or two of these on.

I know this came up in the post about geometries, but i agree, stop turning these things into fixed gear 26in park bikes.

  10. I think pegs also can be good for "flatland" or trackstand tricks. i think with pegs those way of fixie riding can be more interesting. i love trackstand tricks and i wanna try what else i can do if i have a peg:)
